Cashflow Plan Range Extended - 30th January 2006

PlanWare has extended Cashflow Plan, its range of Excel-based business cash flow planners. A free, fully-operational version has been introduced. The "paid-for" versions have been upgraded to generate consolidated projections for multiple subsidiaries (with single or mixed currencies). Cashflow Improver, a dynamic checklist for analyzing cash flow forecasts, has been added to all versions.

Cashflow Plan helps a business plan and improve future cash flows and anticipate funding needs. It generates monthly cash flow projections for a year ahead with weekly forecasts for the initial months. Fully-integrated income statements, balance sheets and ratio analyses with extensive charts are also created. For easy updating, projections can be rolled forward a month at a time.

Other special features include Quik-Tour, Quik-Plan for compiling 'first-cut' projections, and several tools for 'what-ifs' and sensitivity analysis. Cashflow Plan's main Excel file contains hundreds of menu options and buttons, dozens of formatted reports and graphed variables, and up to sixteen thousand formulae. Online help covers cashflow planning as well as using and expanding Cashflow Plan.

Cashflow Plan is aimed at businesses with tight cash flows for use by professional planners and managers with minimal experience of cash forecasting. Six versions are available to suit different-size businesses engaged in manufacturing, distribution or services. Each version can handle US/Canadian and UK/International accounting formats. Prices from free to US$199. Cashflow Plan requires Microsoft Excel for Windows.

Insights into Business Planning - 15th October 2001

PlanWare has released the results of an extensive survey that provides useful insights into the process of preparing a business plan.

The survey found that a "typical" business plan had about fifteen pages; needed a few months to research and write; and required about three drafts. Generally, plans were more difficult to prepare than had been anticipated - especially the financial projections and market analyses - but only limited use was made of external advisers. Most plans were viewed as critically important and were frequently used to help raise venture capital. Much more time was spent researching plans than writing them.

Two types of plans were identified. Basic plans were under ten pages long and widely used for internal purposes or to assess the viability of businesses. Comprehensive plans were mainly used to raise venture capital or bank loans.

Lessons for business planners to be drawn from the survey include the following:

  1. Decide the underlying purpose of the plan at the outset. This will dictate the length of the plan, amount of research required and overall time scale.
  2. Compile a detailed table of contents first. Use this to identify critical issues requiring research and/or assistance.
  3. Plan a work program and timetable which allows adequate time for researching, writing and redrafting. The more important the plan, the longer it will be and the longer it will take to complete.
  4. Recognize that the process could be much more difficult than expected. Consider seeking outside help, sooner rather than later, for the most vital areas.

The findings were based on a survey conducted by PlanWare amongst 450 respondents who had written business plans. Full details and analyses are contained in a white paper entitled "Insights into Business Planning" at <http://www.planware.org/businessplanning.htm>.
